Ältadalen Preschool

Ältadalen Preschool sits tightly up against an urban road where the building’s shape forms a sound and safety barrier for the preschool playground, which opens up onto a nature conservation area to the south. The building’s size creates a prominent urban feature against the road, but its scale is more fragmented when viewed from the playground due to protruding volumes and lower entrances. The roofscape, together with the different orientations of the façade's wooden panels, contribute to its playful expression that signposts the building as a preschool. The strict plan originates from a rational programme intended to facilitate cooperation between staff departments. All game rooms look onto the preschool playground and are separated from group rooms by a corridor that creates a joining axis through the entire building. The corridor is broken up by interior glass walls that offer visibility between the rooms, as well as the group rooms that join the corridor without dividing walls.
