Proposal for the new Bergman Center on Fårö island

Client: Bergman Center Foundation

Invited design competition 2010

The program outlined by the competition included an existing property, Fårö School which was thought would encompass a large portion of the future Berman Center. Our proposal intervenes between the existing buildings in order to establish a relationship with that which was always most important to Bergman himself; Fårö with its barren landscape, the sea and the light.

As a starting point for the Bergman center we began with Fårö’s specific character. The building prioritizes views of the sea and the church, and how it meets the street. The austere natural setting that characterizes the island - the rock formations, stone walls, and the openness of the landscape has driven the material choice for the project.  The building addition consists mainly of the entrance and the stage that together establish the weight of the building’s effect. The stage represents a vital aspect of Bergman’s relation to the public and the entrance declares the building’s presence in the landscape.
