Planning investigation of the placement and design of a new care home in Brunn, Värmdö

Client: Public planning office of the municipality of Värmdö

Area: 4300 m2

Analysis period: 2012

This property lies directly west of Brunn’s town center near Ingarökyrka, a church surrounded by culturally significant buildings and national trust sites. It is a waterside property with trees and tall reed grass along Strömma Canal to the north. The site also enjoys a favorable collective traffic situation.

The proposal has a varied configuration at different scales in order to better weave into the old existing buildings and also to be read as housing instead of an institutional block. The site, near Ingarövägen is both driven by the conditions of the property but also from a desire to create a deliberate street space with qualities that invite the residents to look out toward the street.

One goal was to build on a single level to create ideal conditions for the elderly with easy access to the outside which is a crucial aspect of well-being. Another goal was to avoid long corridors but to create the ability to wander around on the interior with connections that create loops instead of dead-ends. The rooms are oriented on one side toward quiet inner gardens or the forest and on the other side toward the common spaces or with views to the street.
