Kvarnkullen Preschool is part of the Västra Ursvik extension. The building is located in the town park that was created on Kvarnkullen (lit: Mill Hill) in the northwest area.

The preschool occupies an area of around 1,600 m2 and is built on two levels with eight sections, dining hall and school kitchen. The location in the park has influenced the shape of the building which meets the site playfully with its curved cornerless walls that avoid creating backsides while also helping to form a defined street space. With its wooden façade and sedum roof garden, the building is an extension of the park and the small urban wood that grows there. The garden has overhanging areas in natural material and is integrated with the park.

The shape of the building comes also in response to the programme where the organisation of space supports teaching activities. Based on the thinking behind Sundbyberg City’s local programme for schools and preschools, the communal areas are meant as large brush strokes to give plenty of room for the children to make their own mark on the building: “The facilities should not be bound by their spatial design but build upon a flexibility where staff, listening attentively to the children, can set up different learning environments. A part of this thinking is the building’s organisation around a central square - a spacious and versatile place where widely different activities can take place. Students can play, work in groups and inspire one another here.”
