Invited competition entry for future elderly home in Norra Djurgårdsstaden
Location: Norra Djurgårdsstaden, Stockholm, Sweden
Client: Micasa Properties in Stockholm AB
Collaboration with LAND Arkitekter AB

We are building an elderly home for a generation that grew up with grand optimism about the future, a generation that today regards its old age their second set of teen years and will probably continue to feel youthful despite the struggles that come with age. Our intention was to create an architecture that helps to form an environment reflecting the values of a dignified old age and enable people to continue feeling modern and relevant and enjoy an active stimulating lifestyle.

The elderly of the future are today our role models and will continue to be. The elderly home must therefore become a place where more of the elderly wish to stay and play a natural roll in the city life. To create this environment we focus on three main concepts and research questions: integration, attractiveness, and the mentality of the environment which are framed by a context unique to the time we live in.

The culture and natural setting of Norra Djurgårdsstaden gives all residents access to nature. Each living quarter is paired with its own courtyard, a place that’s available year-round whenever desired. In the summer months all residents enjoy pleasant meals outside.

Context - Norra Djurgårdsstaden will become an example neighborhood of environmentally and socially sustainable living in the future. It’s a new neighborhood in close contact with the city and the natural treasures and lake vistas of the national state parks. Together with Boberg’s historical gasworks building in the foreground in beautiful brick the area takes on a unique charm. These buildings will lie across the street from the new residence and will house cultural institutions that together with the sustainability ideals of the new project will characterize the area. The natural walking paths are numerous, with good accessibility that attract many different groups of people so that this becomes a place for all ages to meet and move!
