The commission was to design flexible interiors for meetings and conferences of different sizes, and to furnish the hotel lobby, restaurant, congress floors and guest rooms. In addition to this, we created complimentary environments suitable for informal meetings, spontaneous conversations and small venues outside the arranged situations of the fairground.
The three main functions of the project (fair, congress centre and hotel) gave the project a range in scale – from the vast fairgound to the intimacy of a hotel room. Our ambition was to create environments that are perceived as refined and exquisite, independent of spatial scale.
Our design approach ranges from natural materials and craftsmanlike treatment to contemporary materials applied in new modes. We wanted to create a personal and relaxed environment, beyond the anonymity commonly present in hotels and congress centres. The surrounding landscape infiltrates the building complex with green walls of potted plants and amorphous zones cast in the floor of the congress centre, an idea Mikael Hellgren, Amazon is resposible for idea and execution.
Furniture in the guest rooms consists of movable units to avoid an institution-like character. Lighting, wallpaper and carpets are specially designed for this project, as well as most of the furniture in the public areas.
