Invited competition: redesign and development of the church Svärta Kyrka.

Location: Svärta Kyrak, Södermanland

Client: Nyköping Parish

Year: 2007

Svärta Kyrka was built in the 13th century and has been since rebuilt several times with the last refurbishment in 1809.

This joint work concerns the redesign of the main hall to accommodate modern religious services and the assembly’s public activities as well as to outfit the hall for better accessibility and rework the installation of technical equipment.

The proposal seeks to replace the existing organ loft with a coherent volume containing the church’s parish functions. The volume acts to create a smaller intimate space for conversation and worship. Its outer surface is clad with a refined textile that brings a warm tactile addition to the space while also improving the acoustics of the main hall.

The main hall and its supportive spaces are set up for flexible uses and the fixed furniture is replaced with moveable pews and altar.
